What
is ADSL?
ADSL is a technology that gives high-speed broadband
internet access over existing telephone lines.
The customer pays BT for the line rental and the Internet
Service Provider a fixed fee for unlimited connection to the
Internet.
The connection can be 10, 20 even 40 times faster than a standard
modem.

Availability
About
50% of households are connected.
Conversion of exchanges is dependent upon local demand.
A clearer view of development plans should be available by
end September this year.
Before
you can have an ADSL service:
- Your
exchange has to be ADSL enabled
- An
engineer has to check both the distance from your exchange
and the quality of your line

ADSL
= Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line.
It is asymmetric because it transmits data from the exchange
(downloads) several times faster that it it transmits from
the computer (uploads).
It requires an ADSL modem at both the computer and the exchange.
It
also employs a signal splitter at each end to enable voice
and data at the same time.
