0845 dial-up via modem has been around for a long time but it is still a perfectly good solution for low-volume, non-working day, connection to the Internet and e-mail.

Augury's offering is subscription-free. You pay BT for the line and the (local rate) call charges. You pay Augury nothing.

A large capacity and sophisticated features are made available at no charge in exchange for your use of specified 0845 telephone numbers.

It is important that you understand that you must dial into these numbers.
If you do not dial in over a three month period your account is liable to suspension.

(as at Dec 02) a rough guide is :
Weekdays 08.00 - 18.00 4.0p per minute
Weekdays 18.00 - 08.00 1.5p per minute
Weekends                     1.00 per minute

If your usage is limited and predominantly evening and weekend then 0845 could be all you need.
